Hitting the Fairway

Since my last post, I've been up north, visiting the Great Lakes, camping, hiking in sand, and having a wonderful time. Now it's time to get back to work. I'm opening golf practice this afternoon, for the high school team I coach. It's supposed to be really hot, so I'll have to check the heat index chart, and have water and ice on hand. I plan to get the players to set some goals for themselves for the season, so as to have a focus and a measuring stick. My goals are to encourage a greater degree of dedication and leadership from the experienced players, and better knowledge and application of course management for all players.

Weekend

Saturdays just aren't the same when you don't have to go to work for a while. Other than attending weddings, I haven't been too busy the last few weeks. I'm at the age when the children of friends and colleagues are starting to get married, usually in the summer. Other than the opportunity to hang out and drink at the receptions, the whole wedding thing is kind of wierd. I genuinely wish the young couples a wonderful life, and certainly hope none of them end up as divorce statistics, but the odds are against at least 40% of them. My experience with marriage has been a positive one, indeed a blessing. I guess the only real advice I would give to newlyweds would be to think of marriage as a full time job. Pretty romantic, huh? One can never know what sorts of ups and downs are in store for the future, but by working to ensure open communication, honesty, and mutual respect, the bumps in the road can be ameliorated, or at least survived.

Water, water, everywhere

In reading the county extension agent's column last week in our local newspaper, I realized I needed to take better care of my trees. I got out the soaker hose, and am in the process of soaking the perimiter, called the drop line. I have two young trees to water, so I will be at it all day. Apparently, if you just water the base of the tree, the roots won't get sufficent water. My goal is to defeat the drought and have lovely, green, leafy trees to enhance the beauty of the neighborhood.

new words

I was curious as to the meanings of some words I have heard off and on for a while. I was close on inexorable, which basically means unchangeable, persistent and inevitable. I had a general idea about inculcate, which means to teach something to someone untill they get it. I really had no idea about inchoate, much less how to pronounce it. It means to be new at something, or for something to be in the initial stages. I googled the three words on a whim, so now I know what they mean. I already use inexorable, but the other two probably won't come up in conversation all that frequently.
